City of Green Bay
Jim Schmitt became the 41st Mayor of the City of Green Bay on April 1, 2003. Prior to his election, Schmitt was President of Famis Manufacturing Inc., a paper and cotton converting company that manufactures nd markets disposable products to the health and beauty industries. Schmitt received Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Small Business Entrepreneurial Award, the Chamber of Commerce Small Business Growth Award, and previously held top management positions with several prominent area companies.
While in the private sector, Jim Schmitt became active in local government and served two consecutive terms on the Brown County Board of Supervisors before being elected as Mayor. He has also served as the chairman for the Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council and on a great variety of community and government boards, including the Howe Neighborhood Resource Center, St. Vincent Hospital Advisory Board, Green Bay/Brown County Professional Football Stadium District Board, Astor Neighborhood Association and many others.
As Mayor, Schmitt brings enormous energy to his job and has a strong vision for the City of Green Bay and its downtown. In building a brighter Green Bay to live, play, learn and earn, Jim Schmitt developed a comprehensive plan for Green Bay's future. As part of his vision for a revitalized downtown, Schmitt created a downtown festival grounds on the west side waterfront, laid the groundwork for a world class boardwalk system on the Fox River's east side and over 300 new residential condominium units on the re-activated downtown waterfront, and most importantly, helped ensure over 1,000 new jobs downtown. Under Mayor Schmitt's leadership, Green Bay has become one of the fastest growing Class Two cities in the State of Wisconsin and was recently named the top city for entrepreneurs by both Inc. Magazine and Entrepreneur Magazine. The City has found great success in strengthening neighborhoods, reducing crime, filling business parks and improving services while controlling spending during Schmitt's tenure.
Jim Schmitt earned a BBA degree in Marketing from St. Norbert College. Jim and his wife Dona live on Green Bay's near Eastside, where they raise daughters Anna, Greta, Laura and Eva (who died as an infant). Besides being Mayor, which he says is the best job in the world, Jim enjoys family activities, travel, biking and reading.
